Lost-device recovery

A phone goes missing on Friday afternoon. Here is Monday morning.

When a company Android phone is lost, open it in NounDesk and tap Lost mode. The phone locks and shows your message and phone number on the screen. While in lost mode it reports its location, shown with a Google Maps link and a short history. If it does not come back, erase it with one typed confirmation; factory-reset protection stays on so a thief cannot reuse it. Location is reported only while a device is in lost mode, by design.

Lost-device recovery in NounDesk.

Step one: turn on lost mode

Open the device in NounDesk and tap Lost mode. The next time the phone connects, its screen locks and shows the message you wrote.

  • The finder sees your company name and a number to call, rather than a blank locked phone.
  • Only an administrator can end lost mode, so a stolen phone stays a brick.
  • A found phone comes back to normal with one tap.

Step two: see where it last reported

While a device is in lost mode it reports its location. The device page shows a trail of its recent locations on Google Maps, and warns you if the phone stops reporting because it was switched off or the battery went flat.

  • Most lost phones are in a van, a customer's kitchen or under a seat, and the trail is enough to walk to it.
  • Location is reported only while a device is in lost mode, which Google enforces for company devices.
  • Outside lost mode, no location is collected at all. NounDesk is not a tracking tool.

Step three, if needed: erase

If the phone does not come back, erase it. You type the device name to confirm, and the device factory resets the next time it connects.

  • Factory-reset protection stays on, so the phone demands your Google account before anyone can use it.
  • The command status shows Sent, then Waiting for device, then Completed, so you know when it really happened.
  • The erase is recorded in the audit log with who ordered it and when.

Reduce the damage before a phone is lost

Recovery is the last line. The security policy is the first, and with a few settings in place a lost phone is a hardware cost rather than a data incident.

  • Require a PIN and encrypt storage, so what is on the phone stays unreadable.
  • Block USB data transfer on devices running Android 12 or newer.
  • Set the device to erase itself after too many failed unlock attempts.
  • Turn on the policy setting that keeps location services always on, so a lost phone can still report once it is in lost mode.

Losing a company phone isn't really about the phone. It's the customer list in the CRM, today's job photos, the messaging app that's still signed in. NounDesk is built so the first ten minutes after "I can't find my phone" are calm.

New in lost-device recovery

Three additions for the hours after a phone goes missing. Location is still collected only while a phone is in lost mode, never at any other time.

  • A trail on Google Maps

See the lost phone's recent locations, not just the last one.

  • A warning when it goes quiet

If a lost phone stops reporting, switched off or out of battery, you are told.

  • Location services always on

A policy setting stops anyone turning location off, so lost mode can report when you need it.

Monday morning

A new phone arrives. Ten minutes later it's ready, and the first job of the day isn't delayed.

  • Same QR code

The employee scans the code that set up the old phone.

  • Right group, same policy

It lands where the old one was.

  • Apps install themselves

The same required apps, with no one typing anything.

Lost-device recovery: questions answered

Can I see where a phone is at any time?

No, and that is deliberate. Google reports a managed device's location only while it is in lost mode. NounDesk is a lost-device recovery tool, not an employee tracker.

What does the employee see?

A locked screen with the message you wrote, typically your company name and a phone number to call. They cannot unlock the device until you end lost mode.

What if the phone is off?

Lost mode starts the moment the phone next connects. Until then the status shows "Waiting for device" honestly rather than pretending the lock has happened.

If I erase it, can a thief set it up again?

No. Factory-reset protection stays on after an erase by default. The phone will not set up again until one of your company's Google accounts signs in.

Will I know if a lost phone is switched off or the battery dies?

Yes. When a phone in lost mode stops reporting, NounDesk warns you, so you know its last location on the trail is the one to go to.

What stops someone turning location off on a lost phone?

A security policy setting keeps location services always on, so the phone can still report if it goes into lost mode. Location is only collected while a phone is in lost mode.

Ten phones. Ten minutes. Protected.
